Gait Analysis: What It Actually Tells You About Your Injury Risk

Most runners think of gait analysis as something for elite athletes chasing marginal gains. In practice, it's one of the fastest ways to catch an injury pattern before it becomes an injury (which makes it more useful for the runner nursing a nagging ache than for the runner who feels completely fine).

What We're Actually Looking For

A gait analysis isn't about whether your stride "looks good." It's about identifying specific, repeatable mechanical patterns that predict where load will accumulate over time - excessive hip drop, overstriding, poor ankle mobility, asymmetries between your left and right sides you'd never notice by feel alone.

Why It Catches Things Before They Hurt

Pain is a lagging indicator. By the time you feel it, the pattern that caused it has usually been happening for weeks or months. Gait analysis looks at the pattern directly, which means it can flag a problem while you're still asymptomatic - while it's still cheap and fast to fix.

What Happens After the Analysis

The analysis is the starting point, not the endpoint. What matters is what happens next: a specific set of corrective exercises targeted at the actual pattern we find, not a generic strength program. That's the difference between fixing something in a few weeks and still dealing with it a year from now.

Bottom Line

You can't fix a pattern you can't see. Gait analysis makes it visible, before it costs you a training block.
